Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to Newcastle West shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.4% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 18.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 5.1% and 29.6% respectively for Newcastle West.

The major differences between the female age structure of the City of Newcastle and Newcastle West were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 5 to 9 (5.2% compared to 1.4%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 10 to 14 (5.3% compared to 1.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 30 to 34 (7.4% compared to 10.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (8.1% compared to 11.6%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, City of Newcastle's female population increased by 7,153 people (9.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.75% per year over the period.
