Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.1% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.7% and 21.2% respectively for Regional NSW.

The major differences between the male age structure of the City of Newcastle and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 20 to 24 (8.5% compared to 5.6%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (8.4% compared to 5.8%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (7.9% compared to 5.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (4.1% compared to 5.9%)

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
