Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.5% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 18.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.1% and 22.8% respectively for Regional NSW.

The major differences between the female age structure of the City of Newcastle and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 20 to 24 (8.3% compared to 5.2%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (8.1% compared to 5.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 65 to 69 (4.8% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 70 to 74 (4.3% compared to 5.8%)

From 2001 to 2021, City of Newcastle's female population increased by 15,230 people (21.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.99% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
