Dominant groups
Analysis of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander household types in the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in Hunter Region SA4 shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 26% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 22.4% were one-parent families, compared with 35% and 25.7% respectively for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in Hunter Region SA4.
There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 17.0% compared to 12.5% in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in Hunter Region SA4 while the proportion of couples without children was 20.5% compared to 19.8% in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in Hunter Region SA4.
