The 2021 Census looked for the first time at the level of incidence of selected long-term health conditions in the community. Health conditions are known to be correlated with disadvantage, and First Nations communities often show aspects of socio-economic disadvantage.
Australia-wide, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations show higher rates of Diabetes, Asthma and Mental Health Conditions relative to the total population. But there are lower rates of conditions such as Arthritis and Cancer due to the younger age of the population.Looking at health conditions for First Nations populations in a local area can inform health and engagement strategies and can show how local Indigenous populations are faring relative to those in benchmark areas.
To get a more comprehensive picture of First Nations health and disadvantage, this dataset should be looked at in conjunction with Need for Assistance, Income, Education and Age Groups.
