This Community of Interest looks at the differences between females and males in the area, with comparisons to either the opposite sex or total population within the area, or the same sex in the wider region.

Males and females in the Census are part of the "Sex" classification. While this is often called "gender", this is not the same concept. The ABS collects Male and Female in the Census. While an option for "Other" sex is a part of the form, no information has been released from this characteristic so far for the 2021 Census, and the Census does not measure gender diversity beyond this.

Gender identity is a different concept to biological sex, and may have many different attributes. Not all people identify with the sex they were born with.

With all of the above in mind, this Community of Interest specifically compares females and males as identified in the ABS "Sex" classification.

Differences between females and males in this Community of Interest are focused primarily around workforce and education topics, as these are considered to be of most interest to our users and show the largest differences between the sexes. Users can look, for instance at differing levels of employment, educational attendance, hours worked and incomes for those in the workforce. Typically males have higher incomes but also work longer hours in paid employment than females. Unpaid care and childcare typically show higher rates for females.
