When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Carnegie's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Carnegie in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (2,006 females or 39.6%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (862 females or 17.0%)
- Managers (644 females or 12.7%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 3,512 females in total or 69.4% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, the City of Glen Eira employed 38.5% in Professionals; 17.7% in Clerical and Administrative Workers; and 14.1% in Managers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Carnegie and the City of Glen Eira were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (39.6% compared to 38.5%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Managers (12.7% compared to 14.1%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in Carnegie increased by 1,594 between 2006 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of female residents between 2006 and 2021 in Carnegie were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+826 females)
- Managers (+308 females)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+240 females)
- Labourers (+75 females)
