Kingsbury - Bundoora is bounded by Darebin Creek, the City of Whittlesea, Plenty Road and the City of Banyule in the north, Gresswell Park Drive, Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve, the City of Banyule and Cherry Street in the east, Waiora Road, Kingsbury Drive, Crissane Road, Darebin Creek and Plenty Road in the south, and the southern boundary of K.P. Hardiman Reserve, Winter Crescent, Dunne Street and Darebin Creek in the west.

Name origin

Kingsbury is named after Bruce Kingsbury VC, who died in Papua New Guinea during the Second World War. Bundoora is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "the favourite haunt of the kangaroo".

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years, particularly from the 1960s, spurred by the opening of La Trobe University in 1967. Rapid growth took place from the mid 1990s, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly on the former Bundoora Repatriation, Larundel Psychiatric and Mont Park Hospital sites.
