Settlement history
Settlement of the area dates from the early 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and market gardening. Population was minimal until the 1850s. Growth took place from the 1880s into the early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line and industrial expansion. Significant residential development occurred during the interwar period and the post-war years, particularly during the 1970s. The population has increased slightly since the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
