Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Cumberland Council area in 2021 compared to the City of Ryde shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 26.6% of the population used English only, and 65.2% used a non-English language, compared with 46.3% and 49.5% respectively for the City of Ryde.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Cumberland Council area was Arabic, with 14.1% of the population, or 33,264 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Cumberland Council area and the City of Ryde in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (14.1% compared to 1.6%)
  • A larger percentage using Nepali at home (4.4% compared to 0.6%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (6.7% compared to 13.8%)

  • Mandarin (+2,144 persons)
  • Telugu (+1,511 persons)
  • Urdu (+1,376 persons)
