Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, although population was minimal until the 1840s when the township was established. Growth occurred during the 1870s and 1880s, spurred by the opening of the railway line, improved access and gold mining. The town grew steadily as a service and retail centre. Expansion continued during the early 1900s, aided by the construction of the nearby Wyangala Dam. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population increased marginally during the 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area. The population then declined slightly between 2001 and 2011, due to little change in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
