The ability of the population to access services and employment is strongly influenced by access to transport. The number of motor vehicles owned or used by First Nations households can be used as an indicator of access to transport and ability to participate in society.
First Nations households may be more or less likely to have access to vehicles in some areas based on socio-economic status and the availability of public transport in the area. The number of vehicles can also be related to the number of adults and older children in the household.
Number of motor vehicles data should also be viewed in conjunction with Number of Bedrooms and Household Size to further build the story of the First Nations population in the City of Canning.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the car ownership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in the City of Canning in 2021 compared to [POPBMHH] shows that 85.1% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned at least one car and 12.7% did not, compared with 87.4% and 9.9% respectively for [POPBMHH] .
Of those that owned at least one vehicle, there was a larger proportion who owned just one car, a smaller proportion who owned two cars, and a smaller proportion who owned three cars or more.
Overall, 34.5% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned one car, 30.7% owned two cars, and 19.9% owned three cars or more, compared with 31.4%, 34.2% and 21.8% respectively for [POPBMHH].
The major differences between car ownership for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in City of Canning and [POPBMHH] were:
- A larger percentage of 1 motor vehicle (34.5% compared to 31.4%)
- A larger percentage of No motor vehicles (12.7% compared to 9.9%)
- A smaller percentage of 2 motor vehicles (30.7% compared to 34.2%)
