Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Rhodes in 2021 compared to Concord shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 21.0% of the population used English only, and 74.1% used a non-English language, compared with 59.9% and 37.3% respectively for Concord.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Rhodes was Mandarin, with 30.2% of the population, or 3,454 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Rhodes and Concord in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (30.2% compared to 6.1%)
  • A larger percentage using Korean at home (10.6% compared to 1.6%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (8.3% compared to 3.6%)
  • A smaller percentage using Italian at home (0.4% compared to 9.2%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home decreased by 598 or 6.6%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 216 or 9.9%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Rhodes between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (-928 persons)
  • Korean (-185 persons)
  • Arabic (-144 persons)
  • Chinese, nfd (-121 persons)
