Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Upper North Adelaide in 2021 compared to Lower North Adelaide shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 73.4% of the population used English only, and 20.3% used a non-English language, compared with 74.5% and 16.5% respectively for Lower North Adelaide.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Upper North Adelaide was Mandarin, with 2.7% of the population, or 119 people using this language at home.

The major difference between the languages used at home for the population of Upper North Adelaide and Lower North Adelaide in 2021 was:

  • A smaller percentage using Spanish at home (0.6% compared to 1.6%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home decreased by 101 or 10.2%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 43 or 1.3%.
