More Wollongong residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Wollongong in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (2,000 people or 18.9%)
  • Education and Training (1,179 people or 11.1%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (1,016 people or 9.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 4,195 people in total or 39.7% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Keiraville - Mount Keira employed 14.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 16.5% in Education and Training; and 11.6% in Accommodation and Food Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Wollongong and Keiraville - Mount Keira were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (18.9% compared to 14.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in construction (6.2% compared to 4.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (11.1% compared to 16.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (9.6% compared to 11.6%)

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+378 persons)
  • Retail Trade (+277 persons)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+191 persons)
