Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by people aged 65 to 79 years in Wollongong City Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 78.6% of people aged 65 to 79 years spoke English only, and 17.2% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 89.9% and 4.2% respectively for Regional NSW.

Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by people aged 65 to 79 years in Wollongong City Council was Macedonian, with 4.1% of the population, or 1,173 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for people aged 65 to 79 years of Wollongong City and Regional NSW in 2021 were:
