Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Sunshine Coast in 2021 compared to Mooloolah Valley - Diamond Valley - Balmoral Ridge - Bald Knob shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 17.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.5% and 18.2% respectively for Mooloolah Valley - Diamond Valley - Balmoral Ridge - Bald Knob.
The major differences between the age structure of Sunshine Coast and Mooloolah Valley - Diamond Valley - Balmoral Ridge - Bald Knob were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 85 and over (2.6% compared to 1.1%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 80 to 84 (2.8% compared to 1.6%)

From 2001 to 2021, Sunshine Coast's population increased by 149,502 people (77.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.91% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+12,592 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+12,103 persons)
- 70 to 74 (+11,849 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+11,330 persons)
