Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by recent overseas arrivals in the City of Stonnington in 2021 compared to IMAP area shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 36.4% of recent overseas arrivals spoke English only, and 62.9% spoke a non-English language, compared with 25.8% and 73.5% respectively for IMAP area.

The dominant language spoken at home by recent overseas arrivals, other than English, in the City of Stonnington was Mandarin, with 16.4% of the population, or 1,388 people speaking this language at home.
