Kooyong is bounded by Gardiners Creek in the north and east, Toorak Road in the south and Glenferrie Road in the west.

Name origin

Kooyong is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'camp or resting place' or 'haunt of the wild fowl'.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s. Growth took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the opening of a tram line and railway line. Substantial development took place during the 1910s and 1920s. The population increased slightly during the early 1990s, and then was relatively stable between 1996 and 2011, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
