Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of SSROC region in 2021 compared to Sutherland Shire shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 54.8% of the population used English only, and 39.5% used a non-English language, compared with 82.9% and 13.8% respectively for Sutherland Shire.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in SSROC region was Mandarin, with 6.1% of the population, or 106,182 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of SSROC region and Sutherland Shire in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (6.1% compared to 1.6%)
  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (5.2% compared to 1.0%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (3.4% compared to 1.0%)
  • A larger percentage using Vietnamese at home (2.4% compared to 0.3%)

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 196,644 or 39.6%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 153,509 or 19.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in SSROC region between 2006 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+57,595 persons)
  • Nepali (+25,950 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+14,802 persons)
  • Arabic (+14,068 persons)
