Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of SSROC region in 2021 compared to the City of Canterbury Bankstown shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 54.8% of the population used English only, and 39.5% used a non-English language, compared with 33.8% and 59.1% respectively for the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in SSROC region was Mandarin, with 6.1% of the population, or 106,182 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of SSROC region and the City of Canterbury Bankstown in 2021 were:

  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (5.2% compared to 17.2%)
  • A smaller percentage using Vietnamese at home (2.4% compared to 7.5%)
  • A smaller percentage using Urdu at home (0.7% compared to 2.5%)
  • A smaller percentage using Bengali at home (0.9% compared to 2.5%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 16,492 or 2.4%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 70,084 or 7.9%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in SSROC region between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Nepali (+9,594 persons)
  • Arabic (+5,067 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+4,846 persons)
  • Mandarin (-4,732 persons)
