This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Northern Tasmania Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (5,210 males or 15.0%)
  • Manufacturing (3,686 males or 10.6%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (3,194 males or 9.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 12,090 males in total or 34.8% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Regional TAS employed 15.0% in Construction; 10.8% in Manufacturing; and 11.3% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Northern Tasmania Region and Regional TAS were:

  • A smaller percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (9.2% compared to 11.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in mining (1.4% compared to 3.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Northern Tasmania Region increased by 4,733 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Northern Tasmania Region were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+1,183 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+815 males)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+476 males)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+389 males)
