More Northern Tasmania Region residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Northern Tasmania Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (11,777 people or 17.3%)
  • Retail Trade (6,859 people or 10.1%)
  • Education and Training (5,967 people or 8.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 24,603 people in total or 36.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional TAS employed 16.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.8% in Retail Trade; and 8.5% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Northern Tasmania Region and Regional TAS were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (17.3% compared to 16.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (6.6% compared to 8.1%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Northern Tasmania Region increased by 9,608 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Northern Tasmania Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,199 persons)
  • Construction (+1,362 persons)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+834 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+740 persons)
