The Census question asked respondents if they have been diagnosed with a specific condition (or other condition) from a list of ten conditions plus "other". Combined, these ten conditions comprise approximately 60% of Australia's deaths, and even those which are not deadly contribute substantially to the burden of disease.
Some health conditions, such as arthritis and heart disease increase with age. Other conditions may be suffered at any age. Analysis of the long term health conditions of people aged 55 to 64 years in Mosman Council area in 2021 compared to Ku-ring-gai Council area shows that there was a lower proportion of people with a long-term health condition 32.0% compared to 34.4% in Ku-ring-gai Council area.
The major differences in the long-term health conditions between Mosman Council area and Ku-ring-gai Council area are:
- A larger percentage with Mental health condition (5.7% compared to 4.7%)
- A smaller percentage with Diabetes (2.7% compared to 5.3%)
- A smaller percentage with Arthritis (7.4% compared to 8.5%)
