In 2021, there were more females working as community and personal service workers in the MidCoast Council than any other occupation.

MidCoast Council area’s occupation statistics quantify the broad occupation group in which people work. The occupation classification is generally arranged in descending order by the level of qualification required to perform that occupation, starting with Managers and Professionals and finishing with Labourers.

Differences between females and males are quite apparent in occupation categories nationwide. Males are more likely to perform jobs involving physical labour such as Technicians and Trades Workers, and Machinery Operators and Drivers, as well as Managerial roles. Females are more often found in Community and Personal Service and Clerical roles. The extent to which the local area differs from this pattern can provide important insights into the changing employment landscape for the sexes.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in MidCoast Council area in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Community and Personal Service Workers (3,789 people or 22.2%)
  • Professionals (3,663 people or 21.5%)
  • Clerical and Administrative Workers (2,994 people or 17.5%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 10,446 people in total or 61.2% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Mid North Coast SA4 - Total females employed 22.2% in Community and Personal Service Workers; 23.0% in Professionals; and 18.3% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.

The major differences between the jobs held by females in MidCoast Council area and Mid North Coast SA4 - Total females were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed as Sales Workers (13.3% compared to 12.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed as Professionals (21.5% compared to 23.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in MidCoast Council area increased by 2,312 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of females in MidCoast Council area between 2016 and 2021 in MidCoast Council area were for those employed as:

  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+930 females)
  • Professionals (+554 females)
  • Managers (+243 females)
  • Clerical and Administrative Workers (+238 females)
