Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Kingston in 2021 compared to Clayton South Planning area shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 70.5% of the population used English only, and 26.0% used a non-English language, compared with 28.3% and 67.1% respectively for Clayton South Planning area.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Kingston was Greek, with 4.2% of the population, or 6,611 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Kingston and Clayton South Planning area in 2021 were:

  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (3.5% compared to 10.7%)
  • A smaller percentage using Greek at home (4.2% compared to 9.3%)
