The levels of full or part-time employment, unemployment and labour force participation indicate the strength of the local economy and social characteristics of the population. Typically, unemployment among youth (under 25) and seniors (over 55) are regarded as important indicators of social cohesion.
The participation rate is another indicator - defined as the percentage of the population in the labour force, it applies to all people over 15, and tends to peak among people in their 30s, while being lower for age groups with a lot of students, retirees, and where one partner has child care responsibilities. The size of the City of Kingston's labour force aged 25 to 34 years in 2021 was 16,978 persons, of which 3,871 were employed part-time and 11,233 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status of people aged 25 to 34 years (as a percentage of the labour force) in the City of Kingston in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a higher proportion in employment, and a lower proportion unemployed. Overall, 96.2% of the labour force aged 25 to 34 years was employed (0.0% of the population aged 25 to 34 years), and 3.8% unemployed (0.0% of the population aged 25 to 34 years), compared with 95.3% and 4.7% respectively for Greater Melbourne.
