The levels of full or part-time employment, unemployment and labour force participation indicate the strength of the local economy and social characteristics of the population. Typically, unemployment among youth (under 25) and seniors (over 55) are regarded as important indicators of social cohesion.
The participation rate is another indicator - defined as the percentage of the population in the labour force, it applies to all people over 15, and tends to peak among people in their 30s, while being lower for age groups with a lot of students, retirees, and where one partner has child care responsibilities. The size of the City of Kingston's labour force aged 18 to 24 years in 2021 was 9,184 persons, of which 4,860 were employed part-time and 2,908 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status of people aged 18 to 24 years (as a percentage of the labour force) in the City of Kingston in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a higher proportion in employment, and a lower proportion unemployed. Overall, 92.3% of the labour force aged 18 to 24 years was employed (0.0% of the population aged 18 to 24 years), and 7.7% unemployed (0.0% of the population aged 18 to 24 years), compared with 89.7% and 10.3% respectively for Greater Melbourne.
