Ancestry
The three largest ancestries in the City of Darebin in 2016 were English, Australian and Italian.
Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in the City of Darebin regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in City of Darebin in 2016 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:
- English (33,338 people or 22.7%)
- Australian (30,195 people or 20.6%)
- Italian (19,988 people or 13.6%)
- Irish (15,629 people or 10.7%)
- Greek (12,371 people or 8.4%)
In combination these five ancestries account for 111,521 responses in total, or 76.01% of all responses.
The major differences between the ancestries of the population in the City of Darebin and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of people with Italian ancestry (13.6% compared to 4.3%)
- A larger percentage of people with Greek ancestry (8.4% compared to 1.7%)
