Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s, although population was minimal until the 1850s. Residential growth took place during the late 1880s and early 1890s, aided by commercial growth and the opening of the railway line. Expansion continued during the 1920s, spurred by improved access. Incremental development occurred during the post-war years. The population has increased slightly since the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
