Bundoora - Macleod is bounded by Darebin Creek, the City of Whittlesea, Plenty Road and the City of Banyule in the north, Gresswell Park Drive, Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve, the City of Banyule and Cherry Street in the east, Waiora Road, Kingsbury Drive, Crissane Road, Darebin Creek and Plenty Road in south, and Curtain Street, Bundoora Park, The Fairway, Dunne Street and Darebin Creek in the west.

Name origin

Bundoora is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "the favourite haunt of the kangaroo". Macleod is named after Malcolm Macleod, an original land holder in the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years, particularly from the 1960s, spurred by the opening of La Trobe University in 1967. Rapid growth took place from the mid 1990s, with the population quadrupling between 1996 and 2011, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly on the former Bundoora Repatriation, Larundel Psychiatric and Mont Park Hospital sites.
