Dominant groups

Analysis of the female service age groups of Canberra Region in 2021 compared to Bega Valley Shire shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 19.9% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 31.4% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 17.3% and 38.7% respectively for Bega Valley Shire.

The major differences between the female age structure of Canberra Region and Bega Valley Shire were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (10.8% compared to 8.5%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (17.6% compared to 15.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (14.5% compared to 19.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Seniors' (13.9% compared to 16.3%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Canberra Region's female population increased by 12,697 people (9.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.73% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the female age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+4,380 females)
  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+2,665 females)
  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+2,006 females)
  • Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+940 females)
