Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Byron Shire in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (2,360 people or 14.1%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (2,185 people or 13.1%)
  • Retail Trade (1,635 people or 9.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 6,180 people in total or 37.0% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Ocean Shores - New Brighton - South Golden Beach employed 17.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.4% in Accommodation and Food Services; and 9.9% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Byron Shire and Ocean Shores - New Brighton - South Golden Beach were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (13.1% compared to 10.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (3.3% compared to 1.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (14.1% compared to 17.4%)
