Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Ward 4 in 2021 compared to Blacktown City shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 41.6% of the population used English only, and 52.2% used a non-English language, compared with 47.6% and 46.3% respectively for Blacktown City.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Ward 4 was Filipino/Tagalog, with 11.9% of the population, or 8,713 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Ward 4 and Blacktown City in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Filipino/Tagalog at home (11.9% compared to 5.7%)
  • A larger percentage using Urdu at home (4.2% compared to 2.2%)
  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (4.2% compared to 2.9%)
  • A smaller percentage using Punjabi at home (3.7% compared to 5.2%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 4,103 or 12.0%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 531 or 1.8%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Ward 4 between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Punjabi (+837 persons)
  • Urdu (+731 persons)
  • Nepali (+561 persons)
  • Gujarati (+347 persons)
