More Sale residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Sale's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Sale in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,118 people or 18.2%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (805 people or 13.1%)
  • Retail Trade (658 people or 10.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 2,581 people in total or 42.1% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Wellington Shire employed 15.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.4% in Public Administration and Safety; and 8.9% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Sale and Wellington Shire were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (13.1% compared to 9.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (18.2% compared to 15.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (10.7% compared to 8.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (3.8% compared to 11.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Sale increased by 413 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Sale were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+237 persons)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+158 persons)
  • Education and Training (+62 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+59 persons)
