In Tweed Shire 68.5% of people reporting a need for assistance were in households who were purchasing or fully owned their home, 18.9% were renting privately, and 7.6% were in social housing in 2021.

Tweed Shire's Housing Tenure data provides insights into its socio-economic status as well as the role it plays in the housing market.

For people with a need for assistance due to a disability, housing tenure may differ significantly in some areas from the general population. For instance, people with a need for assistance may have priority in access to public housing, so the social housing category may be higher. This can give an insight into the housing arrangements of this community and indicate the success of housing programs for people with a disability.

Please note: The ABS changed the definition of 'Occupied rent free' in 2021 so that it now falls under the "Other tenure type" category. Users may notice a small increase in this category but it is expected to have negligible effect on the tenure type distribution overall.

Derived from the Census questions:

'Is this dwelling (owned outright, owned with a mortgage etc.)', and 'If this dwelling is being rented, who is it rented from?'
