More North Sydney residents worked in professional, scientific and technical services than any other industry in 2021.

North Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in North Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (1,239 people or 22.8%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (791 people or 14.5%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (492 people or 9.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 2,522 people in total or 46.4% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, North Sydney Council area employed 21.5% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 13.3% in Financial and Insurance Services; and 11.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of North Sydney and North Sydney Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (14.5% compared to 13.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (22.8% compared to 21.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (9.0% compared to 11.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in North Sydney increased by 857 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in North Sydney were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+200 persons)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+195 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+89 persons)
  • Construction (+89 persons)
