Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Mascot in 2021 compared to Bayside Council area shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 37.9% of the population used English only, and 56.1% used a non-English language, compared with 42.2% and 51.5% respectively for Bayside Council area.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Mascot was Mandarin, with 12.5% of the population, or 2,706 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Mascot and Bayside Council area in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Indonesian at home (8.3% compared to 2.3%)
  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (12.5% compared to 6.9%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (1.2% compared to 5.4%)
  • A smaller percentage using Greek at home (2.7% compared to 6.0%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 4,585 or 60.9%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 1,840 or 29.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Mascot between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+1,123 persons)
  • Indonesian (+789 persons)
  • Spanish (+391 persons)
  • Cantonese (+335 persons)
