Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of the City of Yarra in 2021 compared to IMP region shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 12.2% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 16.4% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 10.6% and 14.3% respectively for IMP region.

The major differences between the age structure of the City of Yarra and IMP region were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Seniors' (6.9% compared to 5.9%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (8.0% compared to 7.2%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Older workers & pre-retirees' (10.6% compared to 9.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Tertiary education & independence' (8.5% compared to 13.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2021, City of Yarra's population increased by 14,713 people (19.8%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.82% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2011 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+3,101 people)
