Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of Ward 3 in 2021 compared to Six Cities Region shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 22.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 25.2% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.8% and 21.4% respectively for Six Cities Region.

The major differences between the age structure of Ward 3 and Six Cities Region were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Seniors' (11.4% compared to 9.2%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (11.1% compared to 10.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Young workforce' (12.7% compared to 15.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (18.8% compared to 21.0%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Ward 3's population increased by 4,975 people (7.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.5% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+1,002 people)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+960 people)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+877 people)
  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+678 people)
