Dominant groups

Analysis of the year of arrival for the overseas born Arabic speaking population of Wollongong City Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a similar proportion of people who arrived before 2010, and a smaller proportion of recent overseas arrivals (those who arrived between 2016 and 2021).

Overall, 44.8% of the overseas born Arabic speaking population arrived before 2010, and 29.0% arrived during or after 2016, compared with 44.8% and 33.9% respectively for Regional NSW.

The major differences between the year of arrival data of the Arabic speaking population of Wollongong City and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of arrivals between 2011 to 2015 (24.5% compared to 19.2%)
  • A larger percentage of arrivals between 1981 to 1990 (7.9% compared to 6.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of arrivals between 2016 to Aug 2021 (29.0% compared to 33.9%)
