Dominant groups
Analysis of the Spanish speaking population in Wollongong City Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 12.9% of the Spanish speaking population was aged between 0 and 14, and 29.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 14.3% and 20.5% respectively for Regional NSW.
The major differences between the age groups of the Spanish speaking population in Wollongong City and Regional NSW were:
- A larger percentage of people aged 85 and over (5.7% compared to 2.7%)
- A larger percentage of people aged 75 to 79 (6.5% compared to 4.2%)
- A smaller percentage of people aged 30 to 34 (6.5% compared to 11.1%)
- A smaller percentage of people aged 35 to 39 (7.5% compared to 10.4%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, Wollongong City's Spanish speaking population increased by 112 people (7.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.39% per year over the period.
