In 2021, the largest age group in Ward 3 was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 85 and over year olds, increasing by 1,280 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Ward 3 in 2021 compared to Wollongong City shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 19.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.6% and 18.7% respectively for Wollongong City.

The major differences between the age structure of Ward 3 and Wollongong City were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (6.4% compared to 5.7%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (6.5% compared to 5.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (5.9% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (6.1% compared to 6.7%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Ward 3's population increased by 10,449 people (17.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.82% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 85 and over (+1,280 persons)
  • 60 to 64 (+1,120 persons)
  • 80 to 84 (+1,093 persons)
  • 55 to 59 (+1,052 persons)
