Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Epping in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 43.1% of the population used English only, and 49.9% used a non-English language, compared with 72.0% and 22.3% respectively for Australia.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Epping was Arabic, with 6.8% of the population, or 2,275 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Epping and Australia in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (6.8% compared to 1.4%)
  • A larger percentage using Macedonian at home (5.2% compared to 0.3%)
  • A larger percentage using Punjabi at home (5.3% compared to 0.9%)
  • A larger percentage using Italian at home (3.4% compared to 0.9%)

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 9,586 or 134.8%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 2,157 or 17.6%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Epping between 2006 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Arabic (+1,691 persons)
  • Punjabi (+1,596 persons)
  • Hindi (+638 persons)
  • Mandarin (+577 persons)
