Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of East in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 21.5% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 11.5% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.1% and 16.6% respectively for Victoria.

The major differences between the age structure of East and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (7.7% compared to 6.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (8.8% compared to 7.6%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (6.9% compared to 5.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (3.2% compared to 4.3%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, East's population increased by 13,001 people (12.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.39% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
