South Perth's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating South Perth's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in South Perth in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (8,598 people or 37.3%)
- Managers (3,487 people or 15.1%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (2,699 people or 11.7%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 14,784 people in total or 64.2% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, Nedlands employed 46.3% in Professionals; 15.4% in Managers; and 9.9% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of South Perth and Nedlands were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (8.5% compared to 5.4%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (11.7% compared to 9.9%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (3.1% compared to 1.7%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Professionals (37.3% compared to 46.3%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in South Perth increased by 2,475 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in South Perth were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+1,396 persons)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+418 persons)
- Managers (+315 persons)
- Machinery Operators And Drivers (+142 persons)
