There were more professionals in North Metropolitan Region in 2021 than any other occupation.

This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating North Metropolitan Region's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in North Metropolitan Region in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (96,830 people or 28.4%)
  • Managers (46,800 people or 13.7%)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (44,120 people or 13.0%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 187,750 people in total or 55.1% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Mining and Pastoral Region employed 15.1% in Professionals; 10.8% in Managers; and 20.8% in Technicians and Trades Workers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of North Metropolitan Region and Mining and Pastoral Region were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Professionals (28.4% compared to 15.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (4.6% compared to 14.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (13.0% compared to 20.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Labourers (7.2% compared to 10.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in North Metropolitan Region increased by 43,090 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in North Metropolitan Region were for those employed as:

  • Professionals (+16,717 persons)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+8,160 persons)
  • Managers (+7,697 persons)
  • Machinery Operators And Drivers (+3,266 persons)
