There were more technicians and trades workers in South West Region in 2021 than any other occupation.

South West Region's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating South West Region's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in South West Region in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (27,430 people or 17.9%)
  • Professionals (23,149 people or 15.1%)
  • Labourers (19,478 people or 12.7%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 70,057 people in total or 45.6% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Albany employed 15.5% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 17.2% in Professionals; and 12.6% in Labourers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of South West Region and Albany were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (9.7% compared to 6.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (17.9% compared to 15.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Professionals (15.1% compared to 17.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (12.3% compared to 14.1%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in South West Region increased by 17,896 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in South West Region were for those employed as:

  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+3,975 persons)
  • Professionals (+3,752 persons)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+2,576 persons)
  • Machinery Operators And Drivers (+2,219 persons)
