Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of East Metropolitan Region in 2021 compared to Mount Lawley shows that there was a similar proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 71.0% of the population used English only, and 23.3% used a non-English language, compared with 71.3% and 24.2% respectively for Mount Lawley.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in East Metropolitan Region was Vietnamese, with 2.0% of the population, or 12,786 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of East Metropolitan Region and Mount Lawley in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Filipino/Tagalog at home (1.6% compared to 0.5%)
  • A smaller percentage using Italian at home (1.2% compared to 3.1%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 16,793 or 12.5%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 36,153 or 8.5%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in East Metropolitan Region between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Punjabi (+3,160 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+1,940 persons)
  • Italian (-1,426 persons)
  • Urdu (+1,055 persons)
