Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of East Metropolitan Region in 2021 compared to Jandakot shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 71.0% of the population used English only, and 23.3% used a non-English language, compared with 59.1% and 36.2% respectively for Jandakot.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in East Metropolitan Region was Vietnamese, with 2.0% of the population, or 12,786 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of East Metropolitan Region and Jandakot in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Vietnamese at home (2.0% compared to 0.3%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (1.6% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage using Punjabi at home (1.2% compared to 4.0%)
  • A smaller percentage using Malayalam at home (0.4% compared to 2.5%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 54,042 or 55.6%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 53,161 or 13.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in East Metropolitan Region between 2011 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Punjabi (+6,232 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+6,031 persons)
  • Mandarin (+4,893 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+2,845 persons)
